Coast Guard medevacs fisherman 160 miles off Cape Canaveral

 

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Coast Guard medically evacuated a fisherman from a commercial fishing vessel about 160 miles east of Cape Canaveral Tuesday at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Wayne Tweety, 45 was aboard the Southern Lady, homeported in New Bedford, Mass., when he recieved a puncture wound to his right arm and was in need of immediate medical attention. A crewmember aboard the 63-foot vessel relayed a mayday to Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville, Fla., search and rescue coordinators via VHF radio for assistance.

An HH-60 helicopter crew from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., immediately launched to assist the fisherman. Tweety was provided initial medical attention en route to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla., and transferred to their care in stable condition.
