Coast Guard Cutter Kodiak Island holds change of command ceremony

KEY WEST, Fla. -- Coast Guard Sector Key West conducted a change of command ceremony Thursday at 11 a.m. for the Coast Guard Cutter Kodiak Island, homeported in Key West. 

Lt. J. Sky Holm relieved command of the Kodiak Island from Lt. W. Scot Gibson during a time-honored, traditional change of command ceremony.

In his opening remarks, Capt. Pat DeQuattro, commander, Coast Guard Sector Key West, said of Gibson, “You’ve borne the responsibility and burden of command exceptionally well. Lt. Gibson’s willingness to adapt to any challenges has been a hallmark of his career.”

Receiving the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Gibson was honored for his service and the performance of his duty as Kodiak Island's commanding officer.

Gibson will be heading to the Seventh Coast Guard District in Miami.

Under Gibson’s exceptional seamanship and leadership, the Kodiak Island patrolled more than 3,600 hours and conducted many law enforcement and search and rescue cases, including caring for and processing more than 150 migrants attempting to illegally enter the U.S.

Holm is reporting from the Coast Guard Cutter Chase, a 378-foot high-endurance cutter homeported in San Diego, where he served as the weapons officer.
